Today is the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. We pay tribute to the sacrifices of peacekeepers in keeping and enforcing peace all over the world. We also think of the 86 families who lost their loved ones during peacekeeping missions.
Irish participation in UN Peacekeeping operations represents the longest unbroken record of any nation in the world with over 70,000 tours of duty since 1958.
Today is a day that we should pay tribute to the brave contribution of these men and women and recognise the incredible work they do.
