In the Dáil this week, I asked the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar if the Government would consider acquiring a strategic airlift aircraft for the Defence Forces. I have previously raised this issue with the Tánaiste.
Military air transport is a real weakness for Ireland. Throughout the pandemic alone, we’ve had difficulty getting PPE into the country, troops stranded overseas and citizens stranded overseas also. As an island nation and sovereign state, it’s essential that Ireland has this independent and autonomous capability. Now is the ideal time to purchase one of these aircraft and it would represent massive savings to the taxpayer over time.
I’ve included the response from the Tánaiste.
